Wesley Chapel Fundraiser April 5th 7pm

There is a group in place that is collecting donations to build a memorial where the old Wesley Chapel Church used to stand. The group is going to hold a benefit at the Alexandria Community Center where there will be music provided by 12 mile's own Diamond Head Mountain as well as drinks, snacks, and raffles. As some of you may know the church was devastated by the tornado of March 2, 2012. If you are from or have traveled around the 12 mile area you know this is an iconic structure. They are hoping to reach their goal so they can restore some of the history back to the area so any and every support is much appreciated. Thank you very much and we hope to see you there.

Please stop by and support this wonderful event and help preserve our local history!

Reducing Your Carbon Footprint-4

recycle symbol

Hopefully you have been seeing how easy it is to start reducing your carbon footprint by the previous
articles--First,  Second, Third.  Well, here are three more easy ways:  Reduce, reuse, and recycle.

Reduce --Choose purchases with little or no packaging. Buy in bulk. Use cloth grocery bags. Can your own foods and get rid of metal cans.  Glass jars can be used over and over again. Buy less.

Reuse--upcycle or repurpose items.  Donate to a charity or second hand shop. Pinterest is a great resource for repurposing items--trash to treasure sites help also. Buy from yard sales or second hand shops. Hand me downs are usually very much appreciated!

Recycle--This is an easy thing to do as we have curbside recycling here in Alexandria.  It is just a matter of discipline and setting the recycling can to the curb.

These are all very easy, responsible, money saving, eco-friendly ways to reduce your carbon footprint and make this a better planet for our children.  Let's just DO IT!

Riley Rd./ Four Mile Water Main Installation

Just an FYI for those of you that take Riley road/4 mile from Alexandria to the AA—The NKY Water District is installing a new water main from KY 10 to the AA. The construction has begun  with hopes of completion by December 1st, 2014.
They advise that traffic will be affected although they say it will be maintained.  You may expect delays at times.  Those living on Riley will experience water outages sporadically.  Construction workers will be alerting residents when digging will be in front of driveways.
So just be aware that this will be an issue until December!
Drive carefully—Riley/Four Mile  is a dangerous road anyway!  Please keep the worker’s safety in mind!

Reducing Your Carbon Footprint 3

We have been over 2 ways to reduce your carbon footprint.  To see previous posts go here and here.   The third way to reduce your carbon footprint is to unplug/turn off your elecrical gadgets.  Anything electrical like computers, chargers use phantom energy even when not in use if they are plugged in.  You can use a power strip to turn off all current to electronics.  Make sure to turn lights off in an unused room.  By turning off/unplugging electrical appliances, you can save about $100 a year on your electric bill and reduce your carbon footprint!  Start your savings now!

Stock Up Alert

Meijer has the Stock up Alert item this week—actually it is 2 items!  Strawberries are 5 for $5 and cabbage is 19 cents per pound.   Both of these are super prices so why not take advantage of the sale?
Image of Strawberries
You could flash freeze the strawberries to use later.  Just cut off the green tops and wash, pat dry and place on a cookie sheet in the freezer until completely frozen.  Then bag the berries and place in the freezer.  Remember to label and date the freezer bag!  Jam is a great way to use your stash of berries!  I follow the jam recipe in the pectin package—just 3 ingredients, fruit, sugar and the pectin.  I see jam making in my near future! What about you?
Does anyone use cabbage in their vegetable soup?  If so, just shred the cabbage the size you like it and bag in freezer bags, label, date, and throw in the freezer.
Or you could make Sauerkraut.  I haven’t tried that but you could google it and give it a try—19 cents per pound is a great buy.  Cabbage will keep in your refrigerator much longer than lettuce so buy an extra for slaw and store it in the produce bin inside the fridge!

Both items are very good for you foods that are cheap to buy right now so I encourage you to take advantage of them!

Until next week,

AA

Reducing Your Carbon Footprint

Why should we reduce our carbon footprint?  Easy answer…..for our children and our children’s children.  Reducing your carbon footprint is very easy-just need to live intentionally and think about issues affecting our earth.  Want to know how you can make a difference?  Here is one way to do this:

Use CFL light bulbs- Easy right?  One bulb replaced can reduce up to 1300 lbs. of carbon dioxide over the course of it’s lifetime.  That is why they are stopping production of incandescent bulbs!  If every house in the USA used CFL bulbs, we could reduce the electricity used for lighting by 50%!  Change out all of those old bulbs and help our planet!  See, I told you it was easy!  More tips to come!

Crock Pot Recipe

One lb. white northern or navy beans
4 cups beef or chicken stock
1 cup carrots sliced thickly
1 cup celery sliced thickly
1 cup diced onion
1 teaspoon minced garlic
1 hambone and 1 cup cubed ham pieces
salt and pepper to taste

Pick over and rinse beans.  Place in 6 qt. crock pot and add water 2 inches above beans.  Let soak overnight. Drain water and add broth, carrots, celery, onion, and hambone.  Add water to cover about 1inch.  Cook on high for 5 hours. Remove ham bone and tear off any meat --put back in crock pot along with cubed ham. Season with salt and pepper to taste.  Cook on low for 3 hours more. If you want your soup thicker take out 1 cup of beans and mash up then add to pot and stir.
Garnish with cheese and/or sour cream.

If you are not home to  remove ham bone- just add large chunks of ham at the beginning and remove ham bone before serving. Cooking time would be 6 hours on high.

Enjoy!
